PTE Academic Scoring Rubrics

Set the priority while practicing!

PTE Academic assesses speaking, writing, reading and listening skills via a computer in a single two-hour test session. During the two-hour test session, the test consists of three main parts: Speaking and Writing ( part-1), Reading (part-2), and Listening (part-3). The PTE Academic assesses real-life academic English, which means you will hear extracts from lectures and view graphs and charts. You will hear a range of accents in the test, from British and American to non-native speakers, so you will become familiar with the kinds of accents you encounter in everyday life. There are total 22 different question types.

Do I have to do better in every question type?

The answer is No !

The PTE Academic Standards and Measurement team has released a report on the concordance between PTE Academic and IELTS Academic. The report shows that the overall score concordance between the two tests remains similar to previous studies, indicating a stable relationship. The study also introduces individual concordances for Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing scores, which were not previously available. Our extensive research indicates that dedicating attention to 13 to 14 of the 22 question types in the PTE Academic exam is adequate to achieve the necessary score for visa and study objectives. Students who utilized the provided scoring mechanism as a reference while preparing for the test achieved their desired PTE Academic scores. Achieving success depends on having a well-organized study schedule, receiving guidance for efficient practice, and comprehending the scoring metrics derived from a thorough analysis of the PTE exam’s influence on performance results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Since our establishment in 2015, our core mission has been to empower students to achieve their desired PTE score in a single attempt. Our dedicated Research and Development team in Melbourne has constantly been at the forefront of analysing test patterns, developing effective strategies, and refining our coaching methods. For years, the official PTE guide provided a solid foundation for success. However, the landscape of PTE Academic is about to undergo a significant evolution.

On August 7th, 2025, Pearson will implement changes to the PTE Academic test, introducing a more nuanced weighted scoring system. This shift moves away from a simplistic view of scoring and towards a model that assigns different values to each of the 22 question types, much like its counterpart, the IELTS Academic.

As your trusted preparation partner, we knew it was our responsibility to decode these changes and provide you with a clear, actionable roadmap. This document outlines exactly how we have derived the precise scoring percentages that we share in our materials.

The Source of Truth: The July 2025 Pearson Concordance Report

In July 2025, Pearson PLC published a pivotal document that forms the basis of our new scoring analysis. The report is titled:

"Establishing Score Concordance between the enhanced PTE Academic and IELTS Academic"

This official report is not just a minor update; it is a comprehensive analysis of the newly enhanced PTE Academic test. Its primary goal is to explain how the updated test aligns with IELTS and to detail the mechanics of its new weighted scoring system. This document provided our R&D team with the raw data and framework needed for our analysis.

Our Methodology: How We Translated the Report into a Winning Strategy

Our team of experts didn't just read this report; we dissected it to extract every piece of actionable intelligence. Our process for determining the specific weighting of each of the 22 question types was meticulous and multi-faceted:

  1. Deep Analysis of the Core Report: We began by scrutinising the entire concordance study, focusing on the principles Pearson outlined for its new weighted scoring mechanism.

  2. Applying the Socio-Cognitive Framework: The report examines each question through a "socio-cognitive framework." We used this lens to understand what specific skills (e.g., vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, identifying main ideas, paraphrasing) each question truly measures and, therefore, where its score contribution comes from.

  3. Scrutiny of Test Specifications: We cross-referenced the report's findings with the official test specifications and sample materials provided by Pearson for all 22 question types. This allowed us to map the theoretical framework to practical test questions.

  4. Leveraging Performance Data: Crucially, the Pearson report was informed by actual test-taker performance data. By analysing the scoring outcomes described in the report, we were able to calculate the precise impact—the percentage weight—that each question type has on both the individual skill scores (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) and the overall score.

The Result: A Clear Path to Your Target Score

This exhaustive process allowed us to build the reliable scoring tables and strategic advice you see on our platform. We have done the complex research so you can focus on what matters: targeted preparation.

By understanding that a question like Describe Image has a significantly higher weight than Multiple Choice, Single Answer, you can allocate your precious study time more effectively. You now have the power to focus on the tasks that will give you the biggest return on your effort, paving a smarter, faster path to achieving your PTE goals.

We are committed to keeping you ahead of the curve. As the PTE Academic evolves, so will our strategies, ensuring you always have the most current and effective preparation available.
