Everything you need to know about the Skills Profile

As a PTE Training Centre, we want to emphasize how crucial it is for you to understand every aspect of the PTE Academic test. We’re here to guide you through each step of the process, from the various question types to the exam timings. It’s essential that you stay informed about any changes to the test format or scoring system. By being well-prepared, you’ll avoid any surprises on the big day and be able to fully understand and learn from your PTE results. Remember, knowledge is power, and we’re here to help you gain that knowledge to succeed in your PTE Academic exam.

After sitting PTE, each test taker receives a Score Report, typically within 48 hours. In November 2021, the format of the Score Report changed to make the scoring clearer for everyone.

Let’s take a look at what students can now expect after sitting PTE Academic.

1. No more enabling skills

The PTE Academic Score Report offers test takers an overview of how well they performed during their test. It consists of an overall score of between 10 and 90, which grades their English ability against the Global Scale of English (GSE). They will also see individual scores for the four communicative skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. These scores are based on their responses to all the exam tasks.

Test takers can share their score report with an unlimited number of institutions by providing their Score Report Code or assigning results directly via MyPTE.

Before November 2021, the Score Report also showed an Enabling Skills section. This has been replaced by a new personalized Skills Profile which uses the candidates’ test performance to provide specific feedback. The aim of this is to help guide test takers’ future English language learning. It can also be useful for teachers, especially if test takers don’t reach their required score the first time around and are looking to retake the test.

2. Online Skills Profile

The new Skills Profile will only be visible to the test taker. Importantly, it won’t be shared with institutions they are applying to. It is there for the test taker and their teacher to find out which specific language skills can be improved.

So how does it work? In the new profile, you’ll see the candidate’s performance across eight language skill categories:

As your PTE Teachers, we want to help you understand your PTE score report and use it to improve your performance. Let’s break it down:

The blue performance bars on the right side of your score report are your best friends. They give you a clear picture of how well you did in each area of the test. Pay close attention to these – they’re like a roadmap for your study plan.

In the middle of the report, you’ll see symbols. These aren’t just for decoration! They show which language category (or categories) each skill belongs to – listening, reading, speaking, or writing. This information is golden for your PTE preparation.

Here’s why this matters to you: By looking at these bars and symbols together, you can easily spot which areas need more of your attention. For instance, if you see a shorter blue bar in the Short Speaking section, that’s a clear signal that you should focus more on improving your speaking skills.

Remember, your goal is to turn those shorter blue bars into longer ones. So, if you notice a lower score in any section, don’t get discouraged. Instead, see it as an opportunity to improve. We’re here to help you target those areas and boost your scores in future tests.

Use this information to guide your study sessions. If speaking is your challenge, spend more time practicing speaking exercises. If writing needs work, focus on essay practice. Your score report is like a personalized study guide – use it wisely!

3. Personalized recommendations

The Skills Profile also offers personalized recommendations to help strengthen the test takers’ English skills in each category. Simply click on a language category and there will be a drop-down list. It offers a description of the skill area and recommendations based on the GSE learning objective for test-related skills. These recommendations provide useful ways of practicing and improving specific language skills.

Skills Profile Personalized Recommendation - PTE School 2024

With these personalized recommendations, you’ll be able to further tailor your PTE preparation classes to suit learners’ needs and help them succeed.

Remember, language learning is a journey, and your Skills Profile is your GPS. By following these personalized recommendations, you’re not just preparing for a test – you’re enhancing your overall English proficiency in a targeted, efficient way.

We encourage you to spend time exploring your Skills Profile. If you have any questions about the recommendations or how to implement them in your study routine, don’t hesitate to ask us. We’re here to help you make the most of this valuable resource and guide you towards PTE success!

The PTE Academic Skills Profile is a new scoring system introduced by Pearson in November 2021. It replaced the previous enabling skills format with eight parameters that indicate a candidate's test performance. These parameters include:

• Open response speaking and writing
• Reproducing spoken and written language
• Extended writing and speaking
• Short writing and speaking
• Multiple skills comprehension
• Single skill comprehension

The Skills Profile provides a more comprehensive overview of a test-taker's abilities across various language tasks. It is displayed as a bar graph in the candidate's myPTE account, with each bar representing performance in a specific skill area out of a total score of 90.

To view your PTE Academic Skills Profile:

1. Log in to your myPTE account
2. Navigate to the "My Activity" page
3. Click on "View Score"
4. Select "View Skill Profile"

You will then see a bar graph displaying your performance across the eight skill areas. This visual representation helps you understand your strengths and areas for improvement. It's important to note that the exact scores are not provided, but the graph gives a clear indication of your performance relative to the target score you're aiming for.
