Summary
John was an employee in the mental health sector. He was preparing for his master’s in professional psychology. For the registration of general psychology, he needed a proficient English score. For any medical admission or registration, students needs to achieve at least 65 and above in PTE Academic. 79 and above score in PTE Academic is equivalent to IELTS band score 8. John’s goal was to score over 79+ though he needed to get 65 in each section. But John was facing issues in the listening section. So, he joined the PTE School to get training for his PTE exam. John joined the PTE School in 2023. He joined for a 2-weeks PTE course. As he was a full-time worker, he had a very little time to prepare for the PTE test. Challenge
While preparing for PTE, John faced difficulties in getting a good score in the write from dictation & repeat sentence, which are very important topic of PTE and contribute high scores in PTE writing, speaking and listening. Write from dictation contributes almost 27% of marks in both writing and listening section and repeat sentence contributes almost 36% in the speaking and 24% in the listening section.
Write from dictation is the last item of the PTE exam and it is the most important questions that contributes the highest score in the writing and listening section. As it is the last item of the exam, students miss doing this item properly. They don’t make the mindset of time management. What they do wrong is giving more time to the less important items like MCQs as they come first in the exam. Also, because of lack of time at the last moment, students don’t proofread the answer where they might have made some spelling mistakes that cause them to lose more scores. John was also struggling to manage time for the write from dictation.
After practicing for some days, he realized that it’s hard to manage time in the last item, so he booked an appointment with the trainer to seek help to regard the issue.
From the start, actually, the right from dictation, I was having a difficulty with that one. And I think I messaged the admin, “Oh, I’m having a difficulty in right from dictation and repeat sentence. And they just said, Oh, keep practicing. These are the things that you can do. Solution
Once John booked the consultation, our trainer sat with him and analyzed his mock test scores and also the individual practice questions. The trainer identified John was having issues with the time management in the write from dictation. Also, he had a fluency problem in the repeat sentence. So, our trainer gave him a live demo on how to manage time in the last item of PTE as it is one of the most important questions.
If any student wants to get a good score in the write from dictation, they must make a mindset at the beginning of the listening section for saving time for it and spending less time for the less important listening items. In the PTE listening section, there are 8 types of questions to perform. Among them, only the summarize spoken text is the machine bound item where the computer set the taking part time for you. For the other 7 items, you allocate the time. So, it depends on your time management skill and how you perform each item. You must practice a lot to adapt the skill of managing your time, also allocating time for proofreading. Because one of the main reason student fails is they don’t get time for proofreading.
The trainer suggested John to practice from our prediction file and provided him a study plan. John was suggested to complete all the write from dictation and the repeat sentences from the prediction file so that he could make a short-term memory in his brain and be confident in the real exam.
He kept practicing from our prediction file and continued giving mock tests and eventually he built the ability to manage more time for the most important items. His dedication and hard-work made him get the required score in PTE.
